Book Review: Seed of Scorn by Aaron-Michael Hall

Seed of Scorn is the second book in the series that began with Rise of the Nazil and this series just keeps getting better and better. Pentanimir is now the Zaxon, the leader of the Nazil and is facing many challenges. Brahanu is his wife even though she is not of Nazil. Factions of the population are still causing unrest, unable to accept his rule.
His brother, Danimore, has his own issues. Nikolina, the woman that he scorned in favor of the former slave, Zeta, takes her revenge on the couple. In doing so, she unleashes an other-worldly peril that might impact the entire world. Some new characters are introduced and their stories only add to the complex world that Hall has created. Ahvixx and Sahma are a young couple that become involved in the politics of the capital city.
The story has become more complex, yet the pace never falters and it draws you even further into this detailed and interesting world. New evil in the form of Lilinth appears to threaten the fragile peace of the land. The Guardians face new challenges and depend on the sons of Pentanimir and Brahanu.
I can't wait for the next book as this unique series continues to surprise and entertain me. I received this book as an ARC for an honest review.

New Release, Giveaway, and Review: Cora and the Nurse Dragon by H.L. Burke

smallcoracover.jpgCora and the Nurse Dragon is a new middle grade fantasy adventure by author H. L. Burke. It follows the adventures of Cora Harrison in a world where Dragons no longer live in nature but are a resource exploited by humans.
Ages 9 and Up.
The book releases January 31st and is available for pre-order at the special price of 99 cents.

Blurb:
Cora's a young girl with two dreams: to be a dragon jockey when she grows up and to own a pet dragon now. She constantly buys "egg packs" at the dragon emporium in hopes that one will hatch into a rare pet-sized dragon, but only gets short-lived mayflies. However, when an unexpected egg does develop into something new, Cora may be over her head.

Review:
Cora and the Nurse Dragon is a wonderful Middle Grade book that adults will also enjoy. Cora wants to be a dragon jockey. When she buys an "egg-pack" at the local pet store, she usually gets some short-lived mayflies. She is finally lucky enough to get a dragon that she names Cricket. Then she and her best friend Abry are off on a series of adventures. The local rich boy Xavian also joins in and they all become friends.
This is a great book about treatment of animals, but not in a Hallmark sappy way. There is humor and lots of fun as well as some real teaching moments. And it has dragons! What more could you want.
This is a perfect book for your Middle-Grader. If you're lucky, they'll let you read it too.

New Release - Seed of Scorn (The Rise of Nazil Book 2) by Aaron-Michael Hall

Blurb:
With The Rise of Nazil and the defeat of the Vereuxs, the lands of Faélondul were freed. Pentanimir Benoist now stands as Zaxson—the most powerful man in the lands. The love he held for Brahanu was the catalyst for Nazil’s liberation. Will that same love also lead to its destruction?

In Seed of Scorn, the much awaited sequel to The Rise of Nazil, Pentanimir and the entire House of Benoist face an insidious threat—a threat that assails them on all fronts, yet remains largely invisible. Both Nikolina d’Garrion once pledged to Danimore Benoist and Molag Bomgaard—unwittingly manipulated by an ancient evil— threaten the peace of the lands and the lives of the Benoists.

With the release of a Zon’tul and an indissoluble pact, the pall of darkness manifests. A darkness the Guardians could not foresee nor deter. Will the warriors align with those of Nazil or allow the darkness to consume them?

Seed of Scorn takes the epic saga to previously unheard of levels of complexity and intrigue. It is an enthralling tale of love, honor, betrayal, and the perfidious depths people will descend for the sake of revenge. Aaron-Michael Hall’s craftwork—the unforgettable characters, the surprising twists, and turns, the intricate, rich plotting—will dazzle you. If you loved The Rise of Nazil, prepare to be blown away! Seed of Scorn will grip you from the beginning and leave you in awe.

About the Author
Aaron-Michael Hall is a native of southern Illinois. He was born and raised just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Mo. in Lebanon, Illinois. After moving about the country, he has returned to his roots and where this journey began.

When he was younger, Aaron-Michael would get lost in the fantasy and sci-fi worlds created by Andre Norton, N.K. Jemisin, R.A. Salvatore, Octavia Butler, Ursula K. Le Guin, and R. Scott Bakker. These are but a few of his favorite authors.

Being from a large family, Aaron-Michael would often steal away high in a tree or nearby wood seeking solitude. While enjoying the peace his natural surrounding provided, he created his own worlds and languages. For hours, he would be lost in the magnificence of his own imagination. Some characters and elements created then are used now in his current series.

Seed of Scorn is the second novel in The Rise of Nazil series. It is a fun and intriguing read with a host of characters. When asked why he wrote this series, Aaron-Michael simply said, "It needed to be written."

It is his hope that the readers enjoy the wonders of Faélondul even more than he enjoyed writing about them.

Book Review: The Dragons' Chosen by Gwen Dandridge

The Dragons' Chosen is a terrific YA novel about a princess and her fate. Genevieve has been raised to do her duty even though she is slightly spoiled. She will obey when a message is sent that Genevieve must be sacrificed to the dragons that appear every hundred years or so, no matter how frightened she is.
Chris is a Berkeley student who suddenly appears in Genevieve's kingdom, sent to help her. The two travel together to the mountains where the dragons are waiting. Chris, who appears and disappears depending on her class schedule, is determined to help Genevieve evade her fate.
The writing is excellent and the story moves right along. Both Chris and Genevieve are engaging heroines and their personal growth as the story proceeds is interesting. The dragons are great! I don't want to give away the story, but this is a great book for YA and older adults also. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

New Release: Landry in Like by Krysten Lindsay Hager

Series Info: The Landry's True Colors Series is a clean reads young adult humor series about friendship, self-esteem, fitting in, middle school and high school, frenemies, crushes, and self-image.
Genre: contemporary clean teen fiction
Landry in Like (Landry's True Colors Series: Book 3) by Krysten Lindsay Hager
Blurb: Things seem to be going well in Landry Albright’s world—she’s getting invited to be on local talk shows to talk about her modeling career, her best friends have her back, and her boyfriend Vladi has becoming someone she can truly count on…and then everything changes. Suddenly it seems like most of the girls in school are into hanging out at a new teen dance club, while Landry just wants to spend her weekends playing video games and baking cupcakes at sleepovers. Then, Yasmin McCarty, the most popular girl in school, starts to come between Landry’s friendship with Ashanti. Things take a turn when Yasmin tells Vladi that Landry is interested in another boy. Can Landry get her relationships with Ashanti and Vladi back or will she be left out and left behind?
Excerpt:
I wanted to call my friends and tell them about being on the talk show, but Mom said we had to be at the TV station super early — even before school started. She said I could text them, but I had to turn off my phone and go to bed.
“I’m waking you up at four a.m.,” she said. “You have to be there at five-thirty.”
“Can I just call Peyton and Ashanti? Please?”
“Fine, but you have five minutes and then that phone is mine and you’re in bed.”
I dialed Peyton, but her mom said she was in the shower. I told her mom about the show tomorrow and said my mom wouldn’t let me stay up any later to call Peyton back.
“How exciting! I will make sure Peyton knows, and I will be watching you tomorrow. Good luck, honey,” Mrs. Urich said.
I called Ashanti next and told her.
“Get out. Get. Out. No way. This is so exciting!”
“I’m so nervous. My stomach is already doing cartwheels. I can’t do one, but my stomach can. Seems unfair. What if I throw up before I go on? I did that right before I went on at the statewide Ingénue modeling competition in Detroit, and my mom had to give me a cough drop to cover up the smell.”
“I’m sure you’ll be fine, but… just in case, take a cough drop with you,” Ashanti said. “Good luck. You’ll be great and I’ll go set the DVR now.”
I hung up and sent a text to Vladi, India, Devon, Thalia, Tori, and Ericka, so no one would be mad and feel left out. Then I shut off my phone. Mom poked her head in the door to make sure I was in bed.
“Night, hon. Try to get some rest,” she said.
Easier said than done. I stared at my ceiling while thinking about all the things that could possibly go wrong tomorrow. Seeing as the show was on in the morning, I never got to watch it, so I had no idea what the set was like — did it have super high chairs and I’d struggle to get into them? And what if it had those higher stools that were kind of tippy and my rear overshot the seat and I fell off? Or what if the prep questions got lost and the interviewer asked me random things like my feelings on nuclear war or asked me about some foreign political leader who I had never heard of before, and I appeared stupid? Why did I say I’d do this? I tried to get comfortable and it felt like I had just dozed off when I felt my mom shaking my shoulder.
“Rise and shine, TV star,” she said.

What people are saying about True Colors (Landry’s True Colors Series Book One):

From Teenage Book Recommendations in the UK: “This is a fantastically relatable and real book which I feel captures all of the insecurities and troubles which haunt the modern teenage girl. It is about a young model who has to go through tough times when she is torn between a life as a model and managing her friendships. You learn which friends she can most trust and which will create the drama typical of teenage life. Follow the life of Landry and try to see if you can find out which are her true friends before their true colours are revealed. This book is all about relationships, hopes and truth. I loved this book!”

First Book Dream Student is Free and Dream Doctor is on Sale for .99 - Check out this great series!

What if you could see everyone else's dreams? That's the question at the heart of the Dream Series. Sara Barnes, the heroine of the series, quickly learns that it's often more of a curse than a gift. But as the series goes on, and Sara grows from a shy college student, to a newlywed and medical student, to a mother and practicing doctor, she comes to terms with her ability and the power it gives her to solve the mysteries that keep cropping up in her life. EbookDreamStudent   It’s bad enough that, thanks to her supernatural talent, Sara is learning more than she ever needed to know about her friends and classmates, watching their most secret fantasies whether she wants to or not. Much worse are the other dreams, the ones she sees nearly every night, featuring a strange, terrifying man who commits unspeakable crimes. Now Sara wonders if she’s the only witness to a serial killer – and the only one who knows when and where he’s going to strike next.             DreamDoctor   Medical school and life as a newlywed would be enough by themselves for anybody to handle. But Sara’s got another problem – her dreams have started up again. Almost everyone at the medical school is dreaming about the death of the school’s least popular teacher, Dr. Morris, and once again, Sara finds herself in the role of unwilling witness to a murder before it happens. But this time, there are too many suspects to count, and it doesn’t help matters that she hates Dr. Morris every bit as much as any of his would-be murderers do.             DreamChild   Sara thought she had made peace with her dreaming talent, but she’s got a surprise coming: her four-year-old daughter has inherited it, too. Unraveling a mystery with lives on the line is difficult enough under the best of circumstances. But when Sara has to view all the evidence through the eyes – and dreams - of a toddler, it may be an impossible task.             Starting Sunday, the first three books will all be on sale, in an eBook box set called DREAM SEQUENCE! You can get all three books together for just $0.99! You can find it on Amazon... DreamSequence   DreamFamilyV1   Dr. Sara Alderson didn’t think she had a problem in the world, when she walked into the office for her first day as a partner in her own medical practice. And then the police showed up and arrested her for a crime she couldn’t possibly have committed. Twenty four hours later, after a horrifying day and night in jail, Sara comes home a different – and completely broken – woman. Clearing her name is her first challenge, but that’s nothing compared to the task of rebuilding her shattered psyche. And the only way she can do that is with the help of the supernatural dreams, the same dreams that have nearly cost Sara her sanity – and almost got her killed – in the past.       WakingDreamV1 Cover Smaller   After nearly a decade of visiting other people’s dreams, Sara Alderson thought she had made peace with her supernatural gift. Until one night, while watching her husband dream, she saw someone else watching him, too: a mysterious woman in a red dress. The woman in red keeps appearing in the dreams of Sara’s husband and his co-workers. Sara doesn’t know if this mystery woman is trying to steal her husband, drive him mad or something even worse. All she does know is that now she has something she never imagined: a nemesis. And the only thing more dangerous than a nemesis who shares her ability to step into other people’s dreams, is one who knows far more about that ability and how to control it than Sara does.       DreamReunionV1 Cover Smaller   Dr. Sara Alderson is heading back to college for her ten-year class reunion. Her husband and two of her children are coming with her – and so are her supernatural dreams. One of her old classmates is becoming more frantic with every passing night. Sara’s the only one who can save him, and his family – if she can figure out who he is and what he’s planning in time.           ...and four more books, plus a collection of short stories covering the gaps between the novels! Excerpt:

“We’re losing ground, Sir!” one of the Aetoli warriors screamed to his captain over the roar of the seheowks. The shouts of men could be heard on every side amidst the clash of battle, and the ever rolling, thundering waves of the sea created a steady, deafening rumble. The sand churned beneath the hooves of horses and the clawed feet of the seheowks. “We cannot hold this ground!”
“We must!” the captain yelled back. “If defeated here, we lose our country.”
“Sir, this is a senseless sacrifice of good men,” the warrior called out.
“You are an aethalon. You knew the perils when you chose to serve here!” the captain’s commanding voice rang out above the clamor of the battle. “We defend the border at all costs!”
“At the expense of our lives?” the warrior yelled, gesturing at the troops as he fended off another beast who had leapt onto his horse’s flank. “Would the king truly order such a sacrifice? You know as well as I that we cannot hold our position, and when we are dead, the seheowks will march over our lifeless bodies to complete their invasion. Our people will have no warning and our deaths will serve no purpose.”
“You are dismissed,” the captain shouted over the body of the seheowk he had just slain.
“What?” The warrior stared at his captain in open amazement and disbelief. His sword faltered. A seheowk jumped on what it thought was an opportunity, leaping through the air with a powerful bound. The Aetoli’s presence of mind was the sole thing that saved him, he thrust his weapon up and his sword pierced through the creature’s neck just in time.
“What is your name?” the captain demanded in harsh tones as he pulled his horse back a little from the fray.
      “Devrin of House Merle.”
“Courageous hawk?” the captain shouted in disbelief. “You were ill-named, lad, I have no place for a coward in my command, you are dismissed.”
“Sir, you don’t understand, if you would only listen…”
“Not one more word, you are dismissed.”
Devrin glared at the captain and then shook his head in disgust. He turned his roan charger and kicked the horse into a gallop. A haze of red fell across his vision as he rode away from the battle.
“Dismissed as a coward,” he muttered to himself wrathfully. “If the captain would have listened, this task could have been made easier. Well, it’s just you and me, old boy,” the warrior patted his horse’s neck. “Come on, they can’t hold that gap much longer. Yah!”
Clapping his heels to the red horse’s sides Devrin leaned low over his steed’s neck and raced up the hill to where the warriors had pitched their camp. A plan was already formed in his mind, and he meant to put it into action, with or without permission. He knew how to keep the seheowks from crossing through the gap. The Border Patrol needed a better weapon, and Devrin planned to provide it.
“And when this is over I shall call our boy-king to account for every man dead in this fight,” he growled to himself. “Too long has the fate of Llycaelon been ruled by the pride of kings. Too long have good men felt the sting of dishonor because of the House of Arne!”
The camp was set back from the gap, but in clear view of it. Tents and carts were scattered throughout, with small cooking fires dotting the area. Devrin dismounted and raced over to the largest tent. He quickly dismantled it and dragged it to his mount where he tossed it over the horse’s hindquarters in a heap, then he clambered back up into his saddle. The roan danced a little but settled quickly and accepted his master’s odd behavior and the additional burden with long-suffering stoicism. Next Devrin rode over and grabbed one of the long torches that was stuck in the ground and used to light the camp after nightfall. He thrust the end of it into a nearby cooking fire until it burst to life.
Holding the torch high and balancing the mounds of canvas behind him, Devrin raced his horse back down the beach towards the gap and the fighting.
The drums of the seheowks were pounding as he neared the battleground and he knew he must hurry. He tugged on his horse’s bridle, urging the beast to greater speed. The tent flapped and wobbled as they raced towards the battle. Every moment was precious, and Devrin could sense his time running out.
The aethalons were all but defeated when Devrin reached the battleground. The seheowks surged forward, and the aethalons fought and fell where they stood. The great warriors battled desperately, but with a sense of resignation. All hope had been drained hours ago, and the seheowks reveled in this hopelessness. There was an arrogant disdain for their enemy in the seheowk’s every move, as if they knew that victory was near.
Devrin rode up to a weary aethalon and shouted at him. “I need your help!”
“We all need help,” the weary young man whispered back through cracked lips.
“I have a plan!” Devrin shouted, ignoring the man’s comment. “But I can’t do it alone. Come on! I’ll show you what needs to be done.”
“Must…  keep the seheowks… from getting through,” the warrior mumbled back mechanically, making no move to follow Devrin’s lead.
Devrin seized on the warrior’s words. “Yes! We must keep them from getting through. I have a plan that will keep them from getting through! Help me with this.”
The man stared at Devrin in confusion. “What?”
“Fire,” Devrin said grimly, “the seheowks are terrified of it. With fire we can force them back into the sea where they belong. But I cannot do it on my own.”
The young warrior’s face lit with sudden hope. “If we can build a pyre big enough…”
“And keep it burning long enough…” Devrin encouraged.
“We might yet win this day!” the warrior finished Devrin’s thought. His eyes lit with excitement and renewed hope. He burst into action as Devrin indicated the mound of oiled canvas, seizing upon the small hope that was proffered.

The Dragons' Chosen

About the book:

The dragons came from beyond the Crystal Mountains, demanding a virgin sacrifice…and Princess Genevieve learns she's it when she's handed a golden token–the mark of the chosen.

Genevieve accepts her fate. She must, in order to save her kingdom. But the journey to her final destiny is complicated by the arrival of Chris, a 1970s Berkeley co-ed.

To Chris, the whole scenario reeks of deception. Where she comes from, corsets are for burning and virgins are hard to find. She's sure the dragons are out for more than innocent blood, but the only way to find out what they really want is to accompany Genevieve on her journey. Not what she had planned for her sophomore year of college.

Genevieve is duty-bound–unless Chris is right. Then her sacrifice would mean nothing. Other than woe to those who duped her...

About the Author:
Gwen DandridgeI was born in the deep South, but I lived on Long Island most of my first years. It was after I moved to Berkeley, dragging along three small children, that I started to think about creating something more...

For awhile I managed to bury my afterwork creativity into dance. I flitted from Scandinavian to Irish, to English step dancing, to Morris dance and sword. Having a short (or sometimes long) fling with each until finally settling on Morris and English short sword (Rapper) as my favorites.

Northern Renn faire was a hoot to participate in as was the Sidmouth International Dance festival.

After moving to Central California and marrying my love, my creativity has evolved even more, into more tangible forms: mosaics, stained glass, and finally, writing.

Gwen is also the author of the award-winning book The Stone Lions.
